Open in Barside Download Barside

Free. Barside asks before it adds the template, then makes a new note from it. Needs Barside 1.50 or newer.

Writing workouts down is the simplest way to stay consistent. A month of rows shows progress that a single session never does.

Who it is for

It is for anyone training for health or for an event: runners, lifters, people returning to exercise after a break. It is simple enough to keep going on a busy week. Pair it with the habit tracker for daily movement.

What is in the workout log template

  • Goal this month: one line.
  • Workouts: a table with Date, Workout (strength, run, cycle, yoga, walk), Minutes, Effort and Notes, with total minutes.
  • Minutes by workout: a bar chart drawn from the table.
  • Plan for next week and How I feel: the next step and a short check-in.

An example

Ben sets a goal of 600 minutes this month. He logs a 30-minute run with notes "5 km", a 45-minute strength session, 20 minutes of yoga and a 40-minute walk. The total shows 135 minutes after the first week. The chart shows he runs more than he stretches, so next week he plans two yoga sessions after his long runs.

How to use the workout log template

  1. Choose Open in Barside above. Barside opens and asks before it adds anything.
  2. Pick the workspace for the note, and leave Keep it in my templates ticked to use the template again.
  3. Choose Create note. A new note called "Workout log" opens, ready to fill in.
  4. Next time, start one from New note from a template, or let Barside make it on a schedule as a repeating note.

No Barside yet? It is free for Windows, Linux and Mac: download Barside, then choose Open in Barside again.

How to train consistently

  • Plan workouts like meetings, on fixed days.
  • Mix hard and easy days. Recovery is part of training.
  • Use Notes for weights, distances or how a session felt.
  • Compare months, not days.

Make it yours

  • Add workout types you do, such as swim or climb.
  • Add a Distance number column for runs and rides.
  • Start a new note each month as a repeating note.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can I chart my progress over time?

Yes. Add a chart with Date as the groups and Minutes as the measure; Barside groups dates by day, month or year.

Is the workout log template free?

Yes. The template and Barside are both free. Barside Plus is optional and adds cloud backup and sync between computers; templates do not need it.

Do I need an account to use it?

No. Barside runs on your computer without an account, and the notes you make from the template stay in your library on your computer.

Can I change the workout log template?

Yes. Edit the note it makes like any other note: rename columns, add rows, delete sections. To keep your version, open the note and choose Save as template in its options.
