Why these habits
What helped this week
Next week
Free. Barside asks before it adds the template, then makes a new note from it. Needs Barside 1.50 or newer.
Nothing opened? Barside may not be installed yet. Download Barside, then choose Open in Barside again.
Habits grow when you can see them. A row of ticked boxes is a small reward every day, and an empty box is a gentle nudge.
Who it is for
It is for anyone building a routine: more sleep, more reading, more movement, or a new skill. A week per note keeps the page short and gives you a fresh start every Monday. If habits serve a bigger aim, pair it with the goal tracker template.
What is in the habit tracker template
- Habits this week: a database table with your habits, a checkbox for each day from Monday to Sunday, and a Goal column.
- Totals: the row at the bottom counts how many habits you kept each day.
- Why these habits: a reminder of what each habit is for.
- What helped and Next week: a short reflection and the next step.
An example
Leo wants to read more and go to bed earlier. He keeps two of the example habits, renames the other two, and sets each goal to five days. Every evening he ticks the boxes. By Thursday the totals row shows he keeps both habits on weekdays but not on Saturday, so next week he plans his reading for Saturday morning instead.
How to use the habit tracker template
- Choose Open in Barside above. Barside opens and asks before it adds anything.
- Pick the workspace for the note, and leave Keep it in my templates ticked to use the template again.
- Choose Create note. A new note called "Habits · Week 41" opens, ready to fill in.
- Next time, start one from New note from a template, or let Barside make it on a schedule as a repeating note.
No Barside yet? It is free for Windows, Linux and Mac: download Barside, then choose Open in Barside again.
How to make habits stick
- Start with three habits at most. Add one only when the others feel easy.
- Make each habit small enough to do on a bad day: one page, not one chapter.
- Tie a habit to something you already do, such as reading after dinner.
- Missing one day is normal. Try not to miss two in a row.
Make it yours
- Replace the example habits with yours, and set a goal for each, like 5 days.
- Make it a repeating note every Monday, so each week starts fresh.
- Add a Notes column for the days that were hard.
FAQ
Questions and answers
Can Barside remind me to do a habit?
Yes. Add a checklist item with a reminder in any note, and Barside shows an alert at that time. The tracker itself is the table, which you tick each day.
Is the habit tracker template free?
Yes. The template and Barside are both free. Barside Plus is optional and adds cloud backup and sync between computers; templates do not need it.
Do I need an account to use it?
No. Barside runs on your computer without an account, and the notes you make from the template stay in your library on your computer.
Can I change the habit tracker template?
Yes. Edit the note it makes like any other note: rename columns, add rows, delete sections. To keep your version, open the note and choose Save as template in its options.
