Free. Barside asks before it adds the template, then makes a new note from it. Needs Barside 1.50 or newer.

A standup is for spotting problems early, not for status reports. This template puts everyone in one table, so blockers stand out at a glance.

Who it is for

It is for small teams that work closely together: software teams, agencies, research groups and support teams. Teams spread over time zones can use it as a written standup, each person adding a row before a set time. Hold a sprint retrospective every few weeks to improve how you work.

What is in the daily standup template

  • Updates: a table with Person, Yesterday, Today, Blockers and Status (on track, needs help, blocked).
  • Blockers to clear today: a checklist with an owner for each.
  • Parking lot: topics for after the standup, with the people who need to talk.

An example

At 9:00, the team opens today's standup note. Ana writes that she finished the pricing page and starts on emails. Ben marks himself Blocked: he needs access to the analytics account. That goes under Blockers to clear today with Ana as owner, because she can grant it. A question about the design system goes to the parking lot, and the standup ends after eight minutes.

How to use the daily standup template

  1. Choose Open in Barside above. Barside opens and asks before it adds anything.
  2. Pick the workspace for the note, and leave Keep it in my templates ticked to use the template again.
  3. Choose Create note. A new note called "Standup · Oct 5" opens, ready to fill in.
  4. Next time, start one from New note from a template, or let Barside make it on a schedule as a repeating note.

No Barside yet? It is free for Windows, Linux and Mac: download Barside, then choose Open in Barside again.

How to keep standups short and useful

  • Same time, same place, fifteen minutes at most.
  • Each person speaks for a minute. Details go to the parking lot.
  • Filter the table on Status to see who needs help first.
  • Async teams can fill the table before a set time instead of meeting.

Make it yours

  • Replace the example names with your team.
  • Make it a repeating note every weekday at 9:00.
  • Share it in a Barside Space so everyone writes in the same note.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can my team fill it in together?

Yes, with a Barside Space: share the note into the Space, everyone reads it there and answers in the chat, and each person can choose Save to my workspace to keep a copy to fill in. A shared note is not edited by several people at once. Spaces are online; your own library stays on your computer. See team chat and communities.

Is the daily standup template free?

Yes. The template and Barside are both free. Barside Plus is optional and adds cloud backup and sync between computers; templates do not need it.

Does the template work offline?

Adding it needs the internet once, so Barside can fetch it from barside.space. After that, the template and every note made from it live on your computer and work offline.

Can I use it on a Mac?

Yes: Barside for Mac is out. Barside also runs on Windows and Linux. The template page works in any browser, so you can preview it anywhere.
